Demand for these resources has led to the clearance of large areas of Sumatra’s original rainforest for plantations, although areas do remain, among them Gunung Leuser in the north and Kerinci in the central west. Rich in natural resources, the majority of Indonesia’s export income is generated through oil and natural gas, followed by rubber, palm oil and timber.
